Dirty Energy: From Fracking to Tar Sands

Vermont Law School professors Pat Parenteau and Jack Tuholske will discuss legal and environmental concerns related to shale gas hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and tar sands extraction, including the proposed Trailbreaker and Keystone pipelines, water pollution, impacts on climate change, Vermont legislation restricting fracking and the relationship of these dirty fuels to local efficiency and renewables efforts.
Pat Parenteau is Professor of Environmental Law at VLS and Senior Counsel for their Energy and Natural Resources Law Clinic. Former positions include Director of the Environmental Law Center at VLS, Commissioner of Vermont Department of Environmental Quality and Regional Counsel with EPA Region One.
Jack Tuholske is a private lawyer in Missoula, Montana, and serves as visiting adjunct professor both at VLS and at the University of Montana Law School. Jack specializes in public interest environmental litigation throughout the West and has been awarded the William O. Douglas and Kerry Rydberg Awards for his work on behalf of public interest groups.
This presentation is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be contributed by the Coop Food Stores and the Upper Valley Food Coop.

SERG created the original educational curriculum for the Button Up Vermont workshop that was produce by Central Vermont Community Action Council in 2008. In 2009, SERG worked with Clean Air – Cool Planet to bring this successful program to New Hampshire.
The free Button Up workshops have been presented over 200 times telling hundreds of participants how to find and seal cold or drafty spots around their houses, what resources are available to help make efficiency improvements and how to save energy and money.
